Passport size photo in India: 3.5 x 4.5 cm
The standard Indian passport size photo is 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm tall. Exam forms, job applications, college admissions and many government forms ask for this size, either to upload or to paste on paper. This page is set to 3.5 x 4.5 cm at 300 DPI, which is 413 x 531 pixels, and keeps the file under 100 KB.
After you create the file, you can also download a 6 x 4 inch print sheet with eight copies and light cut lines. Any photo studio or a home photo printer can print it on regular 4R photo paper, which usually costs much less than getting new passport photos clicked.
How to make a passport size photo at home
- Stand about one metre in front of a plain white or light grey wall, facing a window.
- Ask someone to take the photo at your eye level, from about one to one and a half metres away.
- Choose the photo here. Drag it so your face sits inside the oval guide, with a little space above your head.
- Press Create file. Download the JPG for online forms.
- For paper copies, tap Download 6x4 print sheet and print it at 100 percent size, without "fit to page".
What a good passport photo looks like
- Face looking straight at the camera, with a neutral expression and mouth closed.
- Head and top of shoulders visible. The face from chin to top of head takes about 70 to 80 percent of the height.
- Both ears visible, eyes open, no hair falling over the eyes.
- No caps, sunglasses or tinted glasses. Religious head covering is allowed if the face is fully visible.
- Plain light background without shadows. Dark or patterned backgrounds get rejected.
- Natural skin colour. Avoid beauty filters and heavy editing.
Other photo sizes
Not every form uses 3.5 x 4.5 cm. The PAN card form uses 3.5 cm tall by 2.5 cm wide, the US visa and OCI forms use 2 x 2 inches, and bank exams use 200 x 230 pixels. Change the size in the tool above, or open the photo resize tool which has these as one tap presets.
Printing tips
Ask the shop to print on 4R (4 x 6 inch) glossy or matte photo paper and to turn off any automatic cropping or resizing. Check one photo with a ruler: it should measure 3.5 cm across. If it is slightly off, the printer scaled the sheet, so print again at actual size.
